Which States Are the Most Sexually Adventurous?
When it comes to sex, every state in the U.S. has its own personality. Some places are more open to exploring fantasies and trying new things, while others are a bit more conservative. Though sexual exploration is a deeply personal journey, there are also many external reasons why some places are more adventurous than others. Factors like culture, social norms, and even access to resources can all influence people’s bedroom habits. Still, when you dig into the data, you can learn a lot about how Americans express themselves and their desires—and surprisingly, there’s a lot of variety across the country!
To dive deeper into these differences, Too Timid conducted a spicy nationwide survey of nearly 1,500 Americans to learn where people are the most sexually adventurous and where others prefer a more traditional approach to sex.

The survey ranked all 50 states based on four main factors:
- The average number of sex toys people own.
- The number of people that respondents have been with.
- The things people have tried, like threesomes or watching porn with a partner.
- The frequency of turn-on ideas people have, like rough sex or sex in public.
By adding up the scores from these categories, the survey created an overall “Sexually Adventurous Score” for each state.
The Most (and Least) Sexually Adventurous States
According to the survey, Montana takes the crown as the most sexually adventurous state in the U.S., with a score of 371 out of 400! On the other end of the spectrum, Rhode Island came in last, scoring just 176.
What makes Montana stand out? They‘re the state with the most sexual fantasies (8.5 per person) and rank high in other areas, too, like the number of sexual partners. Meanwhile, Rhode Island’s lower numbers across the board—especially their average of just 4.5 partners—put them at the bottom.
The Most Common Sexual Experiences in the U.S.
Beyond the state rankings, the survey revealed the sexual experiences Americans are having in the bedroom. These experiences encompass the exciting (and sometimes daring) things people try, whether solo or with a partner. From watching adult videos together to exploring new fantasies, these activities let people get creative, have fun, and discover what makes them tick. Here are the top five experiences people have had:
- Watching porn with a partner (75%)
- One-night stands (56%)
- Receiving anal sex (52%)
- Thinking about others during sex (50%)
- Threesomes (41%)
Most Common Sexual Fantasies in the U.S.
What Americans are fantasizing about is just as revealing! Sexual fantasies are the fun, imaginative daydreams people have about different intimate scenarios that might not always happen in real life. They’re a way for individuals to explore their desires, push boundaries, and get creative with their thoughts—without pressure or judgment! Here’s the list of sexual fantasies that Americans are most interested in:
- Sex with their partner (72%)
- Dirty talk (60%)
- Threesomes (57%)
- Anal sex (49%)
- Rough sex (48%)
The Pros of Being Adventurous
As it turns out, sexual adventurousness is more than just a fun way to spice things up. It comes with a range of benefits that can improve your overall well-being. By exploring new experiences in the bedroom and being more open sexually, research finds that it has a positive impact on your body image. It’s not just about you, either. Some studies also find that “sexploration” with a partner leads to stronger relationships and better sexual satisfaction within a partnership. And, of course, let’s not forget about the impact on your sexual satisfaction. Trying new things can lead to more satisfying and passionate experiences, and it can teach you more about your own body, which leads to better sexual encounters. Whether you’re trying new positions or exploring fantasies, being a little sexually adventurous can significantly enhance your intimate moments, making them more exciting and satisfying.
What It All Means
These regional differences remind us that sexual adventurousness is influenced by more than just individual preferences—it’s also shaped by where we live, the resources we have access to, and the culture around us. While some states are a bit more down to experiment with new things, it doesn’t necessarily mean the less playful states are any less sex-positive.
If you’re seeking a fun way to add some excitement to your bedroom experiences, Too Timid has everything you need. Whether you’re an individual interested in self-love or a couple looking to enhance your intimacy, we offer a wide range of sex toys and accessories to support you on your journey to sexual adventurousness.
